Two Trips to the Zoo

We headed over to Montreal's only outdoor zoo last week. The Ecomuseum Zoo is actually open year round, and houses over 100 species of animals from Quebec. Most of the animals had been orphaned or injured in the wild...

S1, S2 and I went alone while Papa was at work, and grandma watched the baby. They asked many pertinent questions. S2, perhaps through fear, actually held my hand most of the time. She usually refuses, especially while crossing the street!

We met a lynx, had a turkey follow us as we walked along his enclosure, met a friendly caribou, a bald eagle, a porcupine, a raccoon,  and a snow eagle, amongst others!

The girls haven't stopped talking about it since, and we decided to return a second time on Victoria Day with Papa and Baby. Baby was not too impressed, and fell asleep, but the rest of us throughly enjoyed the zoo!

Soccer Season Begins

Soccer Football practice begun this last Wednesday for S1. S2 was too young, but joined in nonetheless. She donned her old Sportball top and joined in the fun!

The practice begun with a warm-up. This was followed by a number of drills, including kicking the ball into the net.

The practice ended with a game of sorts. All the balls were removed save one, and the girls were encouraged to kick the ball towards one of two make-shift, unmanned nets. S1 did not join in, and when I asked her why, she said " I don't have a ball".  I wonder how the game will unfold this week-end…

Backyard Picnic

There are many great things about having a backyard. For starters, it is very accessible. When we were in our condo, going outdoors often seemed like a bigger hassle than it was worth.

Just the other day, the girls decided to have an impromptu picnic in the backyard. No special planning required, they simply grabbed the snack bag, and out they went…

#1 Goes to the Dentist

Although our paediatrician had recommended taking our kids to the dentist starting at age 3, I had put it off for a little over a year. I knew we would be moving to the suburbs, so why start with one dentist only to switch within a year? Also the sale of our condo and the birth of #3 were very time consuming…so I waited.

Just a few weeks ago, I was walking through a local mall with the older Girls when I came across a dental clinic. I would not have noticed it were it not for the kids playing in the waiting room. I approached the receptionist and inquired: Yes, they do have paediatric dentists. And only a few kilometres from our new home! I was able to get an appointment within a few weeks. And so it was that this last Tuesday, #1 and I headed to the dentist for her very first visit. #2 was napping, and #3 was in the trusty hands of Grandma.

I tried to prepare our daughter for her first appointment, and she did not seem too apprehensive. The waiting room included a kid's corner with crayons, colouring books, and picture books all about going to the dentist. We read one together. She must have really liked it as she requested that I read it over and over again.

Her name was called promptly at 14h, and we followed the dental hygienist to the office. The dentist was young, cool, and very nice. #1 seemed mesmerized. First they counted her teeth. Then she donned a pair of very cool pink sunglasses so that the bright overhead light wouldn't bother her. Next up, her teeth were cleaned, and she was shown how to floss. They attempted to take some x-rays, but they did not turn out to well due to motion artifact.

The dentist recommended we start a fluoride-based toothpaste twice a day, and floss once a day, neither of which we had been doing. Finally, the appointment over, our daughter picked out a sticker and received a new toothbrush.

Every day since her appointment she announces multiple times a day: I want to brush my teeth…Who would have guessed!

Showing off her smile and new toothbrush!

Almost 9 months old!

Crawls like a pro
Claps her hands
Can pull herself upright
Loves bath time
Enjoys story time (much more than either of her sisters did at this age)
Eats almost as well as S2

Enjoys biting, pinching and scratching her parents, and laughs when they scream!
Transitioned well into the new house, in fact I am not so sure she was aware of the move!
